Grand Beach, MI

**We fully admit that we’re partial to SW Michigan, but for good reason!

Why It Stands Out: Just a short walk from The Neighborhood Hotel Grand Beach, you’ll discover one of the most magnificent sunsets as you enjoy the charming beach. As the sun arcs toward the western horizon over Lake Michigan revealing Chicago’s majestic skyline, Grand Beach becomes a stage for an ethereal entrance to twilight. The sky, once a clear expanse of blue, begins mixing in pastel tones —soft pinks, lavender whispers, and peach that deepen into coral and rich gold. Gentle waves lap the shoreline, each crest catching the fading light so the water glimmers like molten metal edged in flame. The sand, damp near the high tide, acts like a mirror, reflecting sky‐colors back upward—so that the boundary between sky and sand blurs. Driftwood or pier silhouettes stand stark against the glow, dark shapes carving contrast. A cool breeze drifts in off the lake, carrying the scent of water and sand, and as the sun dips, the warmth lingers in the air, even as shadows stretch long and the first stars begin to wink.

Best Spot: Arrive 30 minutes before sunset to arrange your blanket and mentally prepare for the splendor.

Knowledge Drop: From Grand Beach, Chicago is almost due west across Lake Michigan. On a clear day, you’re actually seeing the skyline about 40–50 miles away across the lake.

The sun doesn’t always set at the same point on the horizon. Because the Earth is tilted 23.5° and orbits the Sun, the location of sunset along the horizon moves north and south over the year.

In early summer, the sun sets farther northwest. From your perspective on the New Buffalo shoreline, that puts the Sun’s “backdrop” more to the right (northeast) of the Chicago skyline.

In fall, the Sun sets farther southwest. That makes it appear as if the skyline has “shifted” more left (toward the west) relative to the setting Sun.

Chicago itself doesn’t move, of course. What changes is the azimuth of sunset — the compass direction along the horizon where the Sun goes down.

BTW: Our friends at Harbor Country Adventures offer a dreamy sunset cruise!

Plus, the sunset from the New Buffalo Public Beach is also dreamy and a 5 minute walk from The Neighborhood Hotel New Buffalo!

Lake of the Clouds – Porcupine Mountains (Western UP Michigan)

Sunset Vibe: Quiet and spiritual —no two sunsets look the same here.

Best Spot: Glacier Point or Sentinel Dome for a short hike and 360° views.

Sunset Vibe: Majestic and humbling—classic Sierra Nevada drama.

Why It Stands Out: See the sun dip behind the Pacific while overlooking all of Los Angeles and the Hollywood sign.

Best Spot: The terraces of the observatory.
