Best Wineries in New Buffalo

The Neighborhood Hotel Grand Beach and The Neighborhood Hotel New Buffalo are located close to nature, towns with some of the best shops and restaurants in the area and excellent wineries, breweries and distilleries!

The Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail is the largest of the five wine regions throughout Michigan with 21 wineries! Nine of them are in Southwest Michigan and roughly twenty minutes from New Buffalo.

Most of these wines are estate grown and bottled in small batches. The climate is similar to European wine regions, therefore many of the Lake Michigan Shore wines lean towards an “old world profile.” As wine production continues to flourish – nearly double over the last decade – so does variety and sophistication.

Many of these wineries offer excellent libations plus events [public/private], concerts and often fun for the whole family! We love a day that begins with a great cup of coffee, a solid hike/beach walk followed by an afternoon tasting delicious vino with family and friends in the splendor of Southwest Michigan! These are some of our favorite wineries in the area.

If you choose not to drive between vineyards, Uber might work. Or, if you call a few of the vineyards, they might offer transportation ideas given the time of year, etc..

Book your suite now — you know you’ll want a comfortable place to rest after a day on the vineyard(s)!

Cheers!

Tabor Hill Winery

Tabor Hill feels and look like a classically beautiful vineyard with dreamy views. Here you’ll find several tasting rooms, a lovely patiom and a great restaurant. This place has been around for a while and features some of the oldest Riesling vines in Michigan!

Domaine Berrien Cellars

Domaine Berrien Cellars features Rhone varietals — winemaker, Wally Maurer, focuses on Marsanne, Roussanne, Syrah, and Viognier. Don’t miss the sweet picnic area and pond which is welcoming to pups and (carried in) food.

Free Run Cellars

Free Run Cellars is one of the few MI tasting rooms with table service (delicious cheese/charcuterie) which is a big plus. The relaxing space features views of the peaceful pond which only adds splendor to the experience.

Gravity

Gravity is a lovely outdoor oasis! Sip their delicious, estate-grown wine and/or ciders made with apples and blueberries from nearby farms.

Baroda Founders Wine Cellar

If your visit is in early fall, you’ll likely be able to watch the winemaking as the production happens behind the bar that time of year! We’ve heard the Chambourcin – a light, dry red made from an Old World French hybrid varietal – is a must try.

Lemon Creek Winery

The Lemon Family have been fruit farmers since 1885 — apples, grapes, berries and stone fruit — to name a few. The family has also been creating wine for over 30 years on their 300-acre farm. You’ll find plenty of wine to try plus the very first Cabernet Sauvignon Icewine in the US! In addition to tasting, check out the market, u-pick and peruse their festival calendar!

Hickory Creek Winery

Hickory Creek’s bold, red barn is home to their delightful tasting room. Thanks to limited production, small lot fermentation and classic Euro-style wines, you’ll taste some of the best vintages in the area.

Round Barn Winery, Distillery and Brewery

Great place with a cool lineup of concerts and festivals May-October. In chillier months, don’t miss their holiday celebrations + tastings.

Dablon Winery + Vineyard

This is a big and beautiful vineyard that features award-winning wines in the styles of Burgundy and Bordeaux — the vibe is more of a wine bar vs. tasting room. Checkout Dablon’s event calendar for live music, private barrel tastings/tours and special events. They even have winter movie screening curated by Chicago’s Music Box Theatre!

Shady Creek Winery

This is the go-to spot to enjoy family/friends in a place that’s beautiful with delicious wine that’s approachable. Check out their events page for cool info and live music.
