WITH AGE COMES ADVENTURE: SENIOR TRAVEL IS ON THE RISE!

One of our favorite things about the hotel business are the people that we’re lucky enough to encounter. We’ve had the pleasure of welcoming friends, families, old and young, from around the world. We love learning about everything from travel adventures to feedback about how our hotels can bring a sense of ease and comfort to every single guest who stays with us. Today, let’s focus on our most mature guests as we tap into the subject of senior travel!

A recent AARP survey shows nearly two-thirds (65%) of Americans ages 50-plus plan on traveling in 2024. Most of these travelers will stay within the U.S. (63%), while 37% say they will take at least one international trip.

Where are travelers headed this year? Top domestic trips will be to Florida (16%), California (10%), and Las Vegas (5%). Arizona, New York, Chicago(!!), and Michigan(!!) were also popular.

Another fun fact: last year was the first since the pandemic in which intended travel matched the actual number of trips taken. I think it’s safe to say that in general, people are less hesitant to leave home post covid lockdown!

Keeping with our dedication to comfort for all guests, The Neighborhood Hotel Little Italy, Grand Beach and New Buffalo are all ADA compliant which ensures that anyone with limited mobility will feel secure.

Forbes came out with an article earlier this year that explored the concept of a golden gap year. Typically, a gap year is known as a period of development and self-reflection via traveling that lasts for 12+ months. Gap years are often associated with young people about to enter the realities of adulthood, however, the concept of a golden gap year is becoming more common. According to Forbes, a golden gap year refers to those age 50+, usually retirees and boomers, who set off to see the world. Research from different travel-related organizations shows that older generations have a growing interest in serious travel following retirement. What a way to capitalize on extra time and a lovely way to see friends and family who are scattered all over the world!

In addition to being ADA compliant, The Neighborhood Hotel aims to make each suite feel like an extension of one’s own home in terms of comfort and convenience.

The Neighborhood Hotel Little Italy provides a peaceful nest in the middle of downtown Chicago. The tech-enabled, apartment-style suites (the building is equipped with an elevator) are ideal for short or extended stays. Each spacious suite comes with a full kitchen, plenty of closet/dresser storage, and premium towels/ bed linens. The prime location allows guests to easily access key destinations like: Rush University Medical Center, UIC, UI Health, Cinespace Film Studio, South Loop, Pilsen, West Loop, United Center and the Loop. In the heart of Little Italy, guests are settled in a neighborhood with an old-world feel that seamlessly welcomes the new and modern.

The Neighborhood Hotel New Buffalo is a quaint oasis amidst the charming bustle of downtown New Buffalo. All 9 suites feel beachy, fresh resulting in a true vacation vibe. Guests can take a leisurely stroll to the lake and stop by some of the best restaurants and shops in Harbor Country along the way. Here, visitors are close to all of the action yet tucked away in a space that’s calm, quiet and comfortable.

The Neighborhood Hotel Grand Beach is a true escape. This is a place where nature’s bounty is celebrated and pure comfort is prioritized. Here, days begin with sounds of nature, coffee by the campfire followed by a dip in the glistening pool or yoga near the ravine. The adventurer explores the woods and waters of Harbor Country before a round of golf or tennis. Meanwhile, the relaxed vacationer continues to bask (possibly reclined) amongst the native trees and greenery. The day comes to a close with bbq delicacies garnished with fresh herbs from the garden + s’mores under the stars (or in the plush living room for indoor folks). Each suite features an ideal blend of rustic cabin meets ethereal luxury (complete with full kitchens). The common spaces are campy-hip with warm touches that even smell good (think wood paneled walls, aromatic pine trees, smoky embers). This is your place for adventure, connection, or to just soak in the calm.

Our buildings have stories ingrained in the walls (in a non-creepy way) - stories that are meant to be told and shared. The Neighborhood Little Italy was formerly the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame which honored the greatest Italian-American athletes, broadcasters, and sports workers to benefit athletics in the United States. Once again, we've fallen for a space outfitted with cool history + architecture. Grateful to all of the hard workers and supporters who are turning another NEIGHBORHOOD HOTEL vision/dream into reality!
