Fall here follows a steady pattern. Cool mornings, warm afternoons, farm stands full of pumpkins, and sunsets over Lake Michigan that are hard to leave. We’re happy to host you very soon — here’s a three-day itinerary for some inspo!
Day 1
Morning: Start with a class at Prana/Life Studio in New Buffalo. From there, walk through Warren Woods or Turtle Creek Preserve. Both are quiet, easy trails through beech-maple forest that turns gold by mid-October.
Midday: Lunch at Farmette.
With kids: Head to Dinges Fall Harvest in Three Oaks. A hayride, the Dinges Express train, a corn maze, barnyard animals, and cider and cake donuts fill a couple of hours well.
Afternoon: Rent a bike from Red Arrow Ride in Union Pier and ride the Red Arrow Trail. Stop at Greenbush Brewing Co. in Sawyer, known for its Anger imperial IPA.
With kids: Head to Galien River County Park and New Buffalo Township Memorial Park instead. The park has an elevated Canopy Walkway and a Marsh Boardwalk, both ADA accessible, and a playground next door where kids can burn off energy.
Evening: Dinner at Granor Farm, a working organic farm that hosts family-style dinners in its greenhouse, paired with its own wines and spirits.
If Granor is full, PostBoy on Whittaker Street has a west-facing patio that pairs dinner with sunset.
With kids: Sonny D’s Bar & Grill or PostBoy are both comfortable options. Walk to New Buffalo Beach afterward for sunset over the lake.
Day 2
Morning: Head to Warren Dunes State Park for the climb up and over the dune to the beach.
With kids: Pick apples at Twin Maple Orchard. A wagon ride takes you out to the orchard, and there’s a farm market on site.
Midday: Galien River County Park in New Buffalo. The 300-foot Canopy Walkway and 600-foot Marsh Boardwalk are both ADA accessible. The 1.4-mile Ridge Trail loops through the surrounding woods and ravines.
Afternoon: Shopping downtown along Whittaker Street in New Buffalo.
With kids: Visit Shuler Dairy Farms for a tour built around petting calves and watching the robotic milking stalls.
Evening Stop at Round Barn Tasting Room or St. Julian Winery in Union Pier for wine, beer, and spirits under one roof, then dinner nearby.
With kids: Dinner at Brewster’s or Casey’s.
Day 3
Morning: Book a half or full day on Lake Michigan with Captain Tony at Salmon Hunter Charters. King salmon and coho run through early October, with lake trout and steelhead moving in as the water cools. Gear is provided.
With kids: The New Buffalo Railroad Museum and Cap’n Jack’s Miniature Golf are reliable options, indoors or out. For a bigger outing, Captain Mike’s Fun Park in Bridgman has go-karts, mini golf, and an arcade.
Evening Close the trip with dinner at Beer Church Brewing, a former 1861 church on Whittaker Street with a Neapolitan pizza kitchen. Walk down to New Buffalo Beach for the last sunset of the trip.
Three days, two beaches, a working farm dinner, and a few good trails in between. That’s the shape of fall in Harbor Country. Use this as a starting point and adjust the pace to fit your group.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is peak fall color in Harbor Country? Color typically peaks in mid-October, though it can shift a week or two depending on the year. Warren Woods and Turtle Creek Preserve, both beech-maple forest, are reliable spots to check color progress.
Is Warren Dunes State Park good for kids? The climb up and over the dune is steep and can be tiring for younger kids. Families with small children often prefer Galien River County Park, where the Canopy Walkway and Marsh Boardwalk are flat and ADA accessible.
What fish are running in Lake Michigan in the fall? King salmon and coho run through early October. Lake trout and steelhead move in as the water cools later in the season. Salmon Hunter Charters provides gear for half or full day trips.
Do I need reservations for Granor Farm? Yes. Granor Farm hosts family-style dinners in its greenhouse and space is limited, so booking ahead is recommended, especially on weekends. PostBoy is a good backup if Granor is full.
How many days do I need for this itinerary? This itinerary is built for three days. It can be shortened to a weekend by combining Day 1 and Day 2 afternoon activities, or extended with an extra day at the beach or on the water.
